New Netflix Email Scam Circulating Nationwide, Police Warn

I admit - this one would be easy to fall for.

There is a new scam making its way across the internet and it has to do with everyone's favorite streaming service Netflix.

The scam is simple: hackers send you an email asking you to update your payment information. This is a way for them to get ahold of your credit card information and other private facts about you.

There are a few red flags though that might not be as obvious at first.

• The email in question does not reference you by name but instead by the term "dear"
• The email address used may look like it belongs to Netflix at first but at closer look, you will see that it is simply one trying to imitate it as closely as possible
• The scammers email those that are subscribers and those that aren't subscribers, according to reports

This scam is especially scary because of how many people it could impact and sadly, this isn't the first time something like this has happened with the streaming service. There have been similar crimes like this in the recent past, dating back to February of this year.

Because this isn't anything new, Netflix has a few tips on how to stay secure. Here's what they advise:

• Never under any circumstance enter any important billing or personal information that comes from a link in an email or text message.
• Always check to see if the message is from Netflix by entering "www.netflix.com" into your browser.
• Do not click on any links or attachments in an email or text message.
• Do not reply to an email or text message if you think you are being scammed. Instead, follow the instructions given on their website.

As of now, there have not been any reports of this happening in the Northland but that doesn't mean that is hasn't or couldn't impact us. Be extra cautious if you get an email like the one mentioned above and avoid becoming a victim of this one.
