The powers that be have decided to replace the roof on the Metrodome after in collapsed in December.  If they start right away they should be able to get it done before the Vikings need it in August.

It will be a shame if they decide to build a new stadium where the Metrodome is now and they end up tearing it and the new roof down in a year or so.

Putting a new roof on the 30-year-old facility may cost up to $18 million and take six months to complete, putting into question the Vikings' ability to play its exhibition games there. Insurance is expected to cover some or most of the costs, and the board decided that replacing the entire roof would ease concerns about the stadium's reliability.

The Metropolitan Sports Facilities Commission made its decision after getting a report from engineers with Texas firm Walter P. Moore that urged replacing the roof. The engineers spent several weeks collecting samples from the fiberglass roof and testing them for strength and stability.

The Vikings, in a statement Thursday afternoon, expressed support for the decision but reiterated that a new roof "is not a long-term stadium solution and does not change the urgency to build a new multi-purpose stadium.''
