This Day in Rock History – October 11
On this day in rock history, Kansas released their highest-charting album in the U.S., the multi-platinum Point of Know Return. Daryl Hall, the principal vocalist behind Hall and Oates' hall of fame success story, was born.
Kiss also performed their first-ever show without facepaint. This inaugural unmasked appearance took place in the unlikely and remote setting of Lisbon, Portugal, just three weeks after Kiss first revealed their real faces on MTV. A lengthy legal battle over trademark and business practices between Apple Corps, owned by the Beatles, and Apple Computer was initially settled, as well.
Billy Joel and Montrose released new albums on this date, though the two found themselves on far different career trajectories. The transitional Streetlife Serenade arrived as Joel was hitting the road to build upon his first real career success, meaning he didn't have the time he'd hoped to craft the best new material. Meanwhile, Paper Money marked an early crossroads for Montrose, as founding frontman Sammy Hagar departed after just two albums.
