Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow! Maybe if we sing that long enough, it really will snow. Although, it looks like that won't be the case, at least for another month in the Twin Ports.

We all know how spoiled we have been so far this winter. Twin Ports winters can be incredibly cold and snowy and more often than not, they are. However, so far in 2021, this hasn't been the case at all.

Remember a few years back when we saw that monster snowstorm over Thanksgiving weekend? It left Superior residents stuck in their homes for days and poured feet of snow over the Duluth area.

So far, we haven't had any signs of something like that in the Northland and we are already into December at this point. So what does the future hold for the Twin Ports in December? To find that answer, I looked at the Old Farmer's Almanac and reached out to WDIO Meteorologist Brandon Weathers for an answer.

The Old Farmer's Almanac Says Brace For A Mild December

It is true that you have to take the Old Farmer's Almanac with a grain of salt. Many do not believe in their methodology and others do. They make long-term weather forecasts by region. Our region includes the Twin Ports and parts of Minnesota and Wisconsin.

However, it seems their forecast for December this year is lining up with many other forecasts from the National Weather Service and local meteorologists. According to their forecast, while we will see a snowy month, our snow totals will fall below average for this time of the year.

In fact, they are forecasting half an inch of precipitation for the month, which is half an inch below what we would normally see. They are also predicting that we will see an average temperature in the teens, which isn't too far off from average.

From the start of the month through the end, the Old Farmer's Almanac is forecasting periods of snow, with only one sunny period near the start of the month. So while we will see snow, it doesn't look like any major snowstorms are in our future.

National Weather Service Meteorologist Speaks On December Forecast

KARE 11 News spoke to a National Weather Service meteorologist who spoke on what December has in store for the state. He said that we see a mild winter every few years and this just happens to be that mild winter. The NWS meteorologist also adds that we should enjoy it while we can because winter will get to us eventually, although it likely won't hit us hard in December.

The National Weather Service of Duluth also shared an interesting fact about our snowfall so far this winter on Twitter Wednesday (December 1st), which shows that we have indeed seen snow, just not a major winter storm yet.

WDIO Meteorologist Brandon Weathers Gives A Local Take On December

I reached out WDIO Meteorologist Brandon Weathers to ask him to give me a local take on if the potential of no winter storms this month. Here's what he had to say:

If we define a “big snowstorm” as 6” or more, I would agree that Duluth very well could be safe this month. The only snowmaker worth noting in the foreseeable future is the system that could come our way Saturday night and Sunday. As of now, chances for plowable snow from that round increase going north of Duluth, but we’ll see how the forecast evolves in the coming days!

Wow! It looks like we may very well get through December without a major snowstorm.

In November, the Old Farmer's Almanac predicted a frigid and snowy November for the Twin Ports and that didn't really happen. They also said this winter will be one of the longest and coldest ever. Maybe that will ring true but it doesn't look like that will start this month.
