A group calling themselves the PRN Highway Team has started a petition to rename a stretch of Minnesota highway to honor Prince.

The petition is on Change.org and they have a goal of 5,000 signatures, so far as of writing this, they were well over 3,000, to support a proposal to name a nearly 7 mile stretch of Highway 5 from Eden Prairie to Chanhassen to Prince Rogers Nelson Memorial Highway.

The Chanhassen City Council has already voted in favor of making the name change, now the Minnesota State Legislature must take up the issue and give its approval before the name change can move forward.

According to the petition, a portion of that route is already designated in honor of August Mueller who was a member of the Minnesota State Legislature for 30+ years and died in 1996. The Augie Mueller Memorial Highway starts at  Highway 101 and Highway 5 in Chanhassen and runs approximately 50 miles to Gaylord.

The group says that they are hopeful that they can come to an agreement with the Mueller family to "have the 2-3 miles from Highway 101 to Audubon or Galpin to be designated to Prince Rogers Nelson Memorial Highway."

Supporters are leaving comments, like Kirk Walton who says, "I grew up in Chanhassen, and Prince was a huge part of our community for years. Great benefactor to the schools. Definitely a point of civic pride." and Deirdre Huntington signed because "He was a generous soul who should be remembered for all his good deeds."
