Second Harvest Northern Lakes Food Bank Doubles Space With New Building In Duluth

A long-time Northland non-profit is getting a new home. And, it's a lot larger than the one they're currently in.

Officials with Second Harvest Northern Lakes Food Bank have announced that they've finalized the purchase of the building that formerly housed IKONICS, along Highway 25 between West Duluth and Gary-New Duluth, near Morgan Park. The new building will significantly increase the scope and size of the facility that they use to provide their services that's located in the Airpark.

According to details shared by our news partners WDIO-TV, this new building in Morgan Park will "more than double" the size of their facility.  Executive Director for Second Harvest Northern Lakes Food Bank Shaye Moris offered:

"There's certainly some work ahead.  It will be quite some time before we can move in.  But there will be dedicated space for our programs."

Before the non-profit can move into the new building, it will need to be remodeled to suit their needs. However, the agency is looking forward to the eventual move because it will allow them to expand their services to meet the growing need in the Twin Ports and Northland region. Morris shared that "COVID really showed the need for a bigger facility and the need for food access is only growing".

One thing that the non-profit stressed is that even though a move into a new building will allow them to serve different neighborhoods, they're not abandoning their current area.  In fact, "they've been in discussions with their partners about how to keep services over the hill".

While vacant now, the former IKONICS building was built in 2015.    The company was merged with TeraWulf Inc. in 2021.
