Slow down.  Be cautious.  Don't drive distracted. Especially in road construction work zones or near highway maintenance vehicles.

Many of those safety pleas come from the Minnesota Department of Transportation.  As the state agency in charge of the highway maintenance and repair, MNDOT vehicles are a familiar site on Minnesota's roadways.

Recently, MNDOT shared pictures and details about a crash that occurred on I-90, when a semi truck driver rear-ended one of their dump trucks. In this crash, both of the drivers ended up with injuries as a result of the accident.

The driver was cited for causing the accident.

According to the Minnesota Department of Transportation, the accident "could have been much worse without the attenuator mounted on the back of the truck to reduce the force of the impact".

This accident serves as a good reminder for everyone to be more cautious while driving.  This is especially important while driving through road construction work zones.  Here are some safety tips from MNDOT:

  • Obey the posted speed limits.  The fine for speeding while inside of a work zone is $300.00
  • Drive undistracted.  Put away the cell phones and mobile devices
  • Stay alert
  • Be patient
  • Expect work zones to constantly change.  From day to day, you could experience lane shifts, closures, or moving workers and vehicles
  • Don't make unnecessary lane changes
  • Use the Zipper Merge when lanes combine inside of work zones
  • Never enter a blocked road or one with barriers and cones
