St. Cloud State Men’s Hockey Team Spends Time In Jail After Away Series

The St. Cloud State Huskies spent the weekend beating up on Nebraska-Omaha in Omaha over the weekend, and ended up spending time in jail before returning home.

The top-ranked Huskies beat Omaha 4-1 on Friday and 5-0 on Saturday to claim the Penrose Cup, the NCHC regular season championship title, for the second straight year. The weekend's wins gave SCSU a 13-point lead in NCHC standings over second place UMD. Being there are only 12 possible points remaining this season, St. Cloud locked up the NCHC with this weekend's performance. On their way home, the team ended up having to spend a night at the Watonwan County Jail in St. James, MN due to weather.

Blizzard conditions in Southern Minnesota made travel impossible for the team's bus, with an assistant coach for the Huskies tweeting "Stuck between 2 huge drifts. Rations & fuel running low, toilet is filling up, 911 said; “It’s gonna take awhile.” Whatever that means."

An ongoing series of tweets from Gibbons detailed the rescue mission for the team, which included a plow coming to open a path for the bus to head to the county jail to ride out the rest of the storm.

The team celebrated their conference championship with a meal of "kinda good" jail food, and some celly pics (not in a cell). FOX 9 reports that the team was able to get back on the road by 7 pm Sunday night, a few hours after the bus was forced to stop.
