Northland residents wanting to visit a casino to bet on sports will now only have to drive a little over an hour to do so as St. Croix Casino Danbury is adding sports wagering.

On Monday, December 20, a morning signing ceremony will be held at St. Croix Casino Danbury. Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers will be the special guest as an amended compact for the purpose of sports wagering is officially put into place.

This is a historic event as St. Croix will be the second tribe in the state to offer sports wagering to the public. On July 1, 2021, Governor Evers announced alterations to the state's gaming compact with the Oneida Nation that allowed it to take sports bets.

The Oneida Nation then opened its sportsbook operation in November of this year inside the tribe's main casino near Green Bay Austin Straubel International Airport. It officially became the first location in Wisconsin where people could legally wager on professional and college sporting events. The lone exception was those sporting events which feature Wisconsin-based colleges.

According to the St. Croix Danbury Casino press release, while the Oneida nation blazed the trail in becoming the first Wisconsin location that allowed legal wagering on professional and college sporting events, their intent is to make that trail a little wider.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz has said that he would sign a sports betting bill only if it has tribal agreement, however Minnesota tribes have not show a significant amount of interest in adding that form of gambling. However, now that sports wagering is starting to expand in Wisconsin one has to wonder if Minnesota will soon follow, especially since locations such as Danbury are very close to the Minnesota border. Now, patrons wishing to participate in all forms of gambling will simply take a short drive into Wisconsin to do so.
