The annual National Night Out is Tuesday August 3 from 5-9pm which helps build relationships between law enforcement and the neighborhoods they serve. Officers from the Duluth Police Department will be participating in neighborhood block parties throughout the city. If you are interested in hosting an event in your neighborhood please click here for more information fill out the host form and submit it before Monday July 19.

Some other events the department is participating in during the month of August is Kids, Cops and Cars, also an annual event happening Thursday August 19 from 11 a.m.– 2 p.m. at Bayfront Festival Park. This event will showcase multiple law enforcement and first responder vehicles that are ready to be explored. There will be K-9 demonstrations, tug-of-war, free food, and other activities too. According to a Press release Chief of Police Mike Tusken said:

This is one of my favorite events that the Duluth Police Department hosts. It gives our officers a chance to interact with our residents and connect with our community.

Operation K-9 will be held Thursday, August 12 from 4 – 7:30 p.m. at UWS Field.  This will also be another event Duluth Police Officers, along with surrounding law enforcement agencies, will participate in. This is the seventh year of this annual event that is hosted by the Northland K-9 Foundation. There will be K-9 demonstrations, law enforcement vehicles on display, and an opportunity to meet the dogs from all the various departments and agencies.

Plus, every Tuesday during the summer, Duluth Police Officers and kids in the community go fishing, which is part of the department's ‘Get Hooked on Fishing’ program. This program also helps build a good relationship between kids and the Duluth Police Department. Lieutenant Ken Zwak said “We want to thank all the sponsors and those who help volunteer during these events. Without them, none of these events would be possible for us and for our community.”

Now more than ever these types of events are crucial not only for all the neighborhoods but for the individual officers as well. It is also so crucial for kids to be part of these programs to gain an understanding of what the police department does for the community and to learn to build a trusting relationship.
