Drivers will encounter a variety of lane closures on both north and southbound lanes of I-35 in Duluth over the next few days.  The traffic deviations are all tied to general bridge and ramp inspections, maintenance, and repairs.

According to details released by the Minnesota Department of Transportation, there will be two different sets of lane closures - at opposite ends of what could be considered the Twin Ports I-35 corridor.

  • The first of those lane closures will be near downtown and Mesaba Avenue.  Monday through Thursday, August 8 through August 11, MNDOT crews will be inspecting the bridge structure in that area.  To accommodate the inspections, alternating northbound and southbound lanes of I-35 will be closed to traffic between the hours of 8:00 AM and 4:00 PM.
  • The second set of the I-35 lane closures will happen near Thompson Hill - between Highway 2 and Boundary Avenue.  This closure is scheduled to happen Tuesday through Thursday, August 9 through August 11 from 4:00 AM to 4:00 PM.  MNDOT crews will be repairing the median guardrail in this stretch of the interstate - weather permitting.

Both project sections are expected to be wrapped up by August 11. However, most outdoor road construction, maintenance, or inspection projects come with the usual qualifier about weather and unforeseen situations affecting the timeline.

Drivers are urged to be observant and cautious.  Obey the signs.  Slow down.  And avoid elements that can distract your driving.
