Betty White is an American Icon whose kindness and sense of humor will live on forever through her many movies and television roles, but she was also a huge advocate for animals of all shapes and sizes. She wrote an animal book back in 2011 and was named an honorary zookeeper in Los Angeles.

According to a press release from AmericanHumane.com," Betty White never met an animal she didn’t like and through her 70-year support of American Humane, the country’s first national humane organization championed the cause of millions of furred, finned, and feathered friends around the world." White was also bestowed the honor of the National Humanitarian Medal for her tireless volunteering and advocacy for the organization for 70 years.

In honor of White's memory, a new social media challenge has emerged called the #BettyWhiteChallenge which no surprise has gone viral. The idea behind the challenge is on or before January 17 which would have been Betty's 100th birthday people are asked to donate five dollars to a local rescue or animal shelter in her honor. Of course, you can donate more than that if you wish but that is the amount that was set for the challenge.

Donations are already streaming into shelters across the country raising thousands of dollars for their care. According to FOX21 " In Superior, The Humane Society of Douglas County has raised over $600 since posting the challenge to their Facebook page earlier this week."

Thank you to whoever came up with this idea, this truly is a perfect way to honor a woman who worked so tirelessly to ensure that animals were treated with the utmost kindness and care. We will miss you so much Betty, thank you for giving us all so much joy and laughs over the years.
