Urban Meyer won two National Championships in six seasons at Florida and he may be on his way back to the glory days sooner than we think. A mere two months after taking over the head coaching job at THE Ohio State University, he has already managed to do the unthinkable, posting a top-five recruiting class while gathering 25 letters of intent from some of the most elite high school football talent in the nation.

Notables among this year’s class are three defensive ends: 6-foot-4, 230 pound Adolphus Washington, 6-foot-4, 245 pound Noah Spence and 6-foot-4, 245 pound Se’von Pittman. Spence had committed to Penn State, but recently de-committed following the Jerry Sandusky scandal.

Probably the most impressive aspect of Meyer’s recruiting class is that he managed it amidst a three-year probation handed down from the NCAA. That probation includes the loss of three scholarships each year for the next three years, a bowl ban, and conference championship ineligibility next season.

Meyer has always been known for his stellar recruiting ability, but this may be his best performance yet. When asked about Meyer’s persistence with recruiting, assistant coach Tim Hinton said, “You know how wrestlers have misshapen ears? So do football coaches, from their cell phones.”

We may have to wait a while to see if this class has what it takes to bring Ohio State back from embarrassment, but something tells me it will be worth it.
