What’s Happened to Minnesota Sports Lately? Vikings, Twins, Wild and Timberwolves All Fail

Lets flash back nearly two years ago. The Twins were chasing down the Detroit Tigers in what would become one of the greatest division races since divisional play began. We had camera crews following the one and only Brett Favre from the airport. Then in the fall of 2009 we witnessed  game 163, and saw Brett Favre throw a hail-marry to Greg Lewis(which would later win an ESPY for play of the year). What could go wrong?

The Twins would once again get bounced out of the playoffs by the Yankees, and we will never forget the NFC championship game when we were a mere field goal away from the Super Bowl; when the unthinkable happened. Brett Favre rolling to his right, throwing across his body to Sidney Rice, but Tracey Porter stepped in front of it and intercepted it. Okay I will stop talking about this game, because Minnesotan fans blood pressure is already through the roof.

Now lets flashback to reality, as we sit right now three out of our four major sports teams are or did finish last in their own divisions. What happened Minnesota?  Is the Twin Cities built on some Indian burial ground, which wont let Minnesota sports team succeed?

Besides the Twins magical 87 season, and the "worst to first" 91 season, but beside those two years Minnesota sports fan have been able to celebrate are, well nothing, but we have had our bad moments, like sorry about bringing this one up but Gary Anderson field goal in the 98 NFC championship game. Adam Kennedy blasting out three home runs to crush the Twins in the 2002 ALCS, or the Twins 2-15 in the Playoffs since 2002. Who could not forget the big three of the Timberwolves that collapsed against the Lakers in the 2004 Western Conference finals, and Jean-Sébastien Giguère nationally embarrassing the Wild, by turning them down like a 18-year-old cheerleader saying no to the band geek, and the Timberwolves drafting like a blind guy picking out grapes, and the Twins playing like a AAA team "oh wait half the team is from AAA", because our professional players cant keep healthy, and Joe Mauer "bilateral leg weakness" which in other words means he was to busy counting in $23 million this off season, and instead of working out.

Lets not get to negative on our sports teams, at least we have teams, but winning divisions gets really old fast, especially when we win six out of nine and have nothing to show for it (slap at the Twins) we all want to go downtown Minneapolis or Saint Paul or even Dinky Town and bath in confetti at the Championship parade. Wouldn't it be a nice site to finally see Lord Stanley Cup finally come to the hockey state?

Minnesota sports in general is like a roller coaster, there are ups and downs, and right now the roller coaster is closed for maintenance. If there is one good thing that has happened in the past few years in Minnesota sports, its that University of Minnesota-Duluth has capture two out of three D-2 Football National Championships, and the UMD Men's hockey team capturing their first D-1 National Championship title this past year. Maybe the Gophers and UMD should switch Divisions, because the Gophers do not do justice to Minnesota, by being our only school in state that plays all sports at a D-1 level.

I was having a conversation with a friend of mine last week, and I was saying "Its really exciting that Maya Moore is a Lynx" my friend responded by saying "That is sad when its June and you are talking about Women Basketball". Have we got to a point where our sports attention is on the Lynx? Its really great for the Lynx to finally start getting some attention, but what happened to our professional teams? Is it time for us to say good-bye the soon to be LA Vikings, and watch the Timberwolves get contracted? Will you be satisfied with winning divisions, and then getting ousted in the first round? 2009 seems so long ago in the eyes of all Minnesotans, and 2011 seems like it will never end for all Minnesota sports teams.
