Wild Sign Defenseman Brodin To 7 Year, $42 Million Extension

The Minnesota Wild announced on Tuesday that they have signed Jonas Brodin to a 7 year contract extension worth 6 million dollars annually. Brodin would have become a free agent after next season, but now the Minnesota Wild have locked him in for the long haul.

According to the Wild, they value Brodin most as a defensive player. Wild General Manager Bill Guerin describes Brodin as an "elite defender." Still, Brodin scored his career high 28 points (two goals, and 26 assists) last year in 69 games played. He also had two assist in post season games according to NHL.com.

Jonas Brodin was drafted in 2011 by the Minnesota Wild as the 10th pick overall. Before this contract extension, he previously signed a a 6 year contract in 2014. Now his contract is extended to the 2027-2028 season and averages about $6 million annually. Brodin says he's excited about staying in Minnesota.

 "I'm really happy, super excited and I love Minnesota. I love everything about it: fans, organization, teammates. It feels like home. I think the last 2-3 years I've been taking my game up a little bit. I can keep improving and keep playing big minutes and be a big part of this team."

The Minnesota Wild finished their 2020 season after falling to the Vancouver Canucks in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
