Richard Howell and others who work closely with the homeless and other displaced people have begun a drive to help those people and they are calling it "SURVIVING COVID-19".

With the Governors mandated closings for places that gather people, that affects the outreach programs for the homeless and other charities. Damiano Center and other places like it can't help with meals or letting people in to get coats, boots, and other winter wear.

I talked to Richard on the phone and he says there are people who still need those things and have nowhere to go. So, he and others saw that need and stepped up to help. Richard told me he has people helping him put this together because those people still need help even if the mandates don't allow these places to open.

Richard says he needs Coats the most. Looking for sizes 2x-4x the most, but they will not turn down any size they get. In addition to needing gloves, mittens, winter hats, scarves, and boots. They are also looking for new socks for people. They would ask that they are new in the package and they are looking for sizes medium or large the most. The last thing that is hard to collect is snow pants, but they are in need.

Also, they will be happy to pick up anything you have to donate. Richard invited people to call him and set up a time. They will come and get it and practice safe distancing. They will take from your porch or garage or directly from you with masks on.

Another thing he mentioned to me is they will take cash. You can drop of cash or checks at Life House and put a note that the money or check is for "SURVIVING COVID-19". and they will put it aside. You can also send them there with that note of memo with it.

Richard told me he and other volunteers went out and delivered hot meals to homeless people for Thanksgiving and the plan is to do it again for Christmas. Richard says he has a truck but needs help delivering, so you can contact Richard to volunteer to hand out coats or meals.  They are also looking for donations of cash toward the meals or gas cards to give to the volunteers to get gas to deliver.

You can get a hold of Richard at 218-940-4498 to ask about pickups, or how to donate or volunteer.
