The Green Bay Packers' training camp has many intriguing position battles, but the backup quarterback job has seemed to be up-for-grabs for the last 18 months.

Back in August of 2013, Graham Harrell, B.J. Coleman, and newcomer Vince Young duked it out in camp to be Aaron Rodgers's number two, but none of them were able to secure the spot.  Instead, the Packers picked up veteran Seneca "Uncle Rico" Wallace, who had requested to be released by the San Francisco 49ers.

During the regular season, Packers fans and coaches probably realized how important it truly is to be the backup of one of the top quarterbacks in the league once Rodgers went down with a collarbone injury.  It also reminded us how valuable Matt Flynn- who struggled playing in Seattle, Oakland, and Buffalo- is to the Green Bay Packers.  If it wasn't for Flynn coming in to tie the Minnesota Vikings and post a 2-2 record, the Packers wouldn't have have been in a "win or go home" situation against the Bears in week 17.  That's probably why Green Bay brought him back with a one-year deal this offseason.  Although he couldn't hang on to his starting quarterback status with the Seahawks and Raiders, Flynn seems to be very comfortable as a backup, and that has been the case for many former Packers (Ty Detmer, Doug Pederson, Zeke Bratkowski).

The man Flynn as been going up against for the number two spot is Scott Tolzien, a former Wisconsin Badger that started two games last season before Flynn took over.  When the Packers signed him to the practice squad at the end of the 2013 preseason, it looked like he was going to be one of Mike McCarthy's quarterback projects for the next year or two, but he was soon called to action when Seneca Wallace obtained a groin injury.  Tolzien showed small flashes during his short stint as the starter, but he definitely proved that he was inexperienced and not ready to take the reigns just yet.

So, after reading this, it should be obvious that Flynn wins the backup job, right?  Not so fast.  If you've noticed any of the backups during McCarthy's tenure, all of them (besides Wallace) have been young players that have the potential to be something better, like Rodgers and Flynn.  With that being said, Matt Flynn is now 29 and some believe that he has reached his ceiling.  Tolzien, on the other hand, is 26 and certainly has the potential to improve in the Packers' offense.

If I had to decide who the backup should be, I would ask myself this question: Who do I feel the most comfortable running the offense in the middle of the game if Rodgers goes down?  In that case, I would choose Matt Flynn because he did exactly that in the tie against the Vikings and made successful starts against Detroit in 2011 and Dallas in 2013.  However, this competition is far from over; the four preseason games will weigh heavily on Flynn's and Tolzien's performances in training camp, and because they are receiving equal reps in practice, I expect the same in these upcoming games.
