Better Business Bureau: Don’t Fall For New Zoom Phishing Scam

It is no secret that a good majority of the workforce has shifted to a work-from-home setting since the pandemic first began back in March. Scammers seem to be preying on this fact now, almost a year into the pandemic, and are targeting those that use online meeting services.

The Better Business Bureau is warning of a new scam involving one of those meeting services: Zoom. Zoom allows you to meet others in a digital setting, like FaceTime on an iPhone.

Here's how it works: users receive an email, text message or message on one of their social media accounts pretending to be from Zoom. The message either states that your account was suspended or claims that you missed a meeting. Another scam involves receiving a message telling you to activate your account with Zoom.

Every message or text includes a link, which is actually a phishing mechanism used to download malware onto your computer or to take your personal information. We all know what happens from there.

With so much going on in the world, it can be hard to keep track of everything, which makes it even easier for scammers to take advantage of you. Make sure you always double check email addresses and domain names, even if something looks legitimate. You should also avoid clicking any link and instead, contact that company directly. This will save you time and effort in the long run.
