Birkebeiner Ski Foundation To Buy Telemark Resort

The Telemark Resort in Cable Wisconsin was built in the 1970's and was once a thriving resort. I remember our ski club taking a trip to Cable to ski there when I was a kid and it was awesome. More recently the resort has seen some tough times with multiple bankruptcies and finally closing permanently in 2013.

But now the future looks bright for the resort as The American Birkebeiner Ski Foundation wants to buy the property and if all goes well they could close by September of this year. The world renowned Birkebeiner ski race starts at Telemark every February so it makes sense for them to want to buy the property.

It will cost around $2 million dollars to buy the resort and knock down the existing Telemark Lodge. The city of Cable and Birkebeiner have applied for a $500,000 grant to help finance demolishing the current lodge so a new development can be built.

Birkebeiner Executive Director Ben Popp said to FOX 21 “It’s really been the centerpiece to the race and the lifestyle for so long and now we’ve decided to bring it back to what it’s meant to be. We’re going to make sure that we the Birkie do what we’re really good at, amazing trails and amazing events. Then we’re going to bring in partners that are really good at hospitality."

With a new hotel and lodge on site it could open opportunities to possibly bring back downhill skiing and tubing, but all of that is far off in the future. Either way this will being a huge benefit to the town of Cable and the Birkebeiner Race.
