On Thanksgiving morning, Duluth's annual Gobble Gallop will once again bring thousands of people together to get little exercise and have a lot of fun.

The Gobble Gallop features the main 5K race,  a 1 mile race and a kids event. All three races run through downtown Duluth. Each event begins and ends near 12 Avenue East, about 150 yards east of the Duluth Running Co., going west on Superior Street on an out-and-back course.

Here is the schedule of events Thanksgiving morning:

  1. 9:00am: Start of the Gobble Giddy-Up Kid’s 1/4 Mile
  2. 9:10am: Start of the Tough Turkey 1 Mile
  3. 9:30am: Start of the Gobble Gallop 5K
  4. 10:30am: Awards Ceremony

Of course, anytime there's an event of this magnitude, there will be traffic and parking implications. On Tuesday, the Duluth Police Department released what the public can expect:

  • Parking restrictions begin at 7:00 a.m. on London Road from 10th Ave E to 14th Ave E and on Superior St from 10th Ave E to 4th Ave W. Vehicles parked in the no parking zones after 7:00 a.m. will be ticketed and towed.
  • London Road will close at 7:30 a.m. from 10th Ave E to 14th Ave E for race setup and the Kid's Run. Superior Street will close at 8:45 a.m. from 5th Ave W to 12th Ave E for the 1-mile and 5K races.
  • Eastbound Superior Street traffic will be detoured at 6th Ave W to 2nd St to continue east. Westbound traffic will be detoured at 12th Ave E to 3rd St to continue west.
  • Lake Avenue will close at Superior Street during the races. Access to Canal Park, Park Point, and the DECC will be from 5th Ave W to Railroad Street, and from I-35 exits at Lake Avenue and 5th Ave W.
  • Downtown traffic should return to normal by approximately 10:30 a.m.

Because of the amount of traffic, as well as participants and pedestrians that will be in the area Thanksgiving morning, the Duluth Police Department is asking drivers to use caution.

I will be running the 5K once again with family and I look forward to seeing as many of you as I can! I'll be one of many with a turkey hat on my head.
