Duluth Salvation Army Surpasses Red Kettle Goal For 2020

The Duluth Salvation Army is pleased to announce that they have surpassed their red kettle goal for the 2020 holiday season. According to a press release, they raised $240,291.41 during "2020 Rescue Christmas Red Kettle Initiative." The goal they set at the beginning of the season was $215,000.

Every year the red kettle initiative serves as the biggest fundraiser for the Duluth Salvation Army. The donations alone account usually for 7-10% of the organizations yearly budget. This year has been particularly challenging due to the COVID-19 pandemic. There were fewer volunteers, less foot traffic near the red kettles, and also a nationwide coin shortage. Captain Terri Ellison elaborates:

“With the dramatic increase in demand for services this year, combined with trying to raise Red Kettle funds during a pandemic, we were challenged with how we can meet the increased level of need,” said Ellison. “Meeting this goal is truly a blessing!”

The pandemic also has created an increased need of the Duluth Salvation Army's services. Many people who would never have expected to lose their income have found themselves needing help this year. There has been a 155% increase in demand for their services nationwide at the Salvation Army.

Fortunately, the Duluth Salvation Army adapted as so many of us had to this year. They added contactless payment options at the red kettles including QR scanners, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and also online donations at DuluthSA.org. While technically donatiosn for the 2020 Rescue Christmas Red kettle Initiative ended on Christmas Eve, they still could use donations.
