February 2021: First Half Was The Coldest On Record For Duluth

You probably saw this coming - February of 2021 is going down in the record books, at least for now.

WDIO Meteorologist Brandon Weathers shared this news on his Facebook page Tuesday (February 16). According to his report, the first half of February has been the coldest on record. Yup - it has actually been that cold.

The report looks at the Duluth area up until Tuesday, February 16th. Up until this point, we have seen an average temperature of about three below. Yikes.

While this isn't great news, Meteorologist Brandon Weathers says that we won't hold on to the title as things warm up for the second half of the month. The first half will go down in the history books, though.

In case you're curious, our average temperature for the month is about fifteen so not only have we been cold but we have been very, very cold for this time of year. At one point during our February cold snap, we saw temperatures as cold as twenty below our average.

This week, the Twin Cities office of the National Weather Service released an outlook for the rest of the month, stating that we will see a nice warm-up for both Minnesota and Wisconsin. In fact, in some spots, we will see a sixty degree difference in temperatures from our cold snap to the second part of the month.

Looking past February, meteorologists at the Weather Channel are predicting a warmer-than-average spring. Not only are they predicting warmer conditions but they are also forecasting spring to come sooner rather than later. Hang in there in the meantime!
