When I was a little boy, I remember my Grandpa Hiram had tumbler glasses that featured pictures of 1965 Minnesota Twins players.  He would tell me about team and how they fell just short of winning the World Series, falling to the Dodgers.  That's why I found this announcement from the Minnesota Twins to be so cool.

The Minnesota Twins announced plans to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the 1965 AL Championship team with special events on Friday, July 31 and a special pregame ceremony on Saturday, Aug. 1 before they battle the Seattle Mariners.

A number of Twins 1965 AL Championship alumni are scheduled to appear throughout the course of the weekend including players Bernie Allen, Jerry Fosnow, Jim Grant, Jim Kaat, Jerry Kindall, Andy Kosco, Frank Kostro, Camilo Pascual, Jim Merritt, Hal Naragon, Mel Nelson, Joe Nossek, Tony Oliva, Jim Perry, Frank Quilici, Rich Reese, Garry Roggenburk, Rich Rollins, John Sevcik, Dick Stigman, Sandy Valdespino and Al Worthington.

A Friday highlight is the Championship Breakfast, where you can enjoy breakfast with some of the star players as well as take part in a Q & A session and more.  You can get tickets and details below.

Saturday, the first 10,000 fans at the game will receive a vintage 1965 Twins bobblehead courtesy of Kwik Trip.  There will also be photo opportunities between 4pm - 5pm throughout the ballpark with members of the 1965 team.

If you can't get there that early, at least make the pregame ceremony, emceed by Dick Bremer featuring more than 20 players from the historic team.  The ceremony will include:

  • Members of the 1965 team will throwing out ceremonial first pitches
  • The National Anthem performed by Maria Versalles (granddaughter of Zoilo Versalles) and Rick Oliva (son of Tony Oliva)
  • The Twins Territory Flag being raised by Mike Haglund, Twins season ticket holder since 1965.

Also, “Take me out to the ballgame” will be sung during the 7th inning stretch by Twins fans who have been season ticket holders since 1965.

Sadly, my grandpa passed away years ago or this would be a special treat for us to experience together.  I'm hoping to attend in his honor and hopefully I'll see you there with your dad or grandpa.
