SS Meteor Celebrates 125 Years And You’re Invited
The SS Meteor is the Whaleback ship which sits on Barker's Island in Superior, WI. It's actually the last above-water Whaleback in the world. They do seasonal tours of it at $12.00 per adult, but you'll be able to tour it for free on Friday, October 1st and Saturday, October 2nd.
The ship was launched from Superior in April of 1896 and to celebrate it's 125th anniversary, they are throwing a party. Not only will the tours be free, they will have food, beverages, and games to enjoy and will also be taking donations to help out their restoration efforts.
The goal is to raise money for lifeboat covers and also repair the steam engine. To me, that steam engine running during tours would make it all the more special. If you can't make it to the celebration and still want to help support the fundraising efforts, they do have a GoFundMe that you can contribute to HERE.
If you've lived in the area your whole life and haven't taken the time to tour this beast, it's a good chance to do it for free. Remember that if you do plan on touring, there are lots of stairs and ladders, so be prepared for that. It's best to wear closed-toe shoes or boots and probably leave the skirts and dresses at home. Also, anyone that's 17 and under needs to be accompanied by an adult. If you miss the free tours, they are still open until Sunday, October 10th and then will close for the season. You can get more information on their celebration, restoration efforts, and other facts about the Whaleback HERE.
