It's already playoff time for the UMD women’s hockey team. They will play the Ohio State Buckeyes this weekend at home at Amsoil Arena in the opening round of the Women’s WCHA best of three series.  The Bulldog bounced the Buckeyes out of the playoffs a year ago as well at Amsoil Arena.

Game one is Friday at 2pm, game two Saturday and if needed a third game on Sunday.

The Bulldogs beat North Dakota in a shootout last Saturday to secure that home playoff spot for the Bulldogs.

Freshman defender Jordan Krause was proud of how the team played, she said, “It was a big win for us on Saturday night, considering it was also senior night and it meant a lot for the girls on our team on being able to pull-off that shoot-out win.”

The Gophers won the league title with a perfect record; they did not lose a game this year.  They are the defending national champions and will host this years Frozen Four at Ridder Arena.

Two Hibbing–Chisholm girl’s hockey players were honored over the weekend.

Leah Coughlin was named to the Class A All–Tournament team.

She helped the Bluejackets win the consolation title vs. Mound West-Tonka.

Katie Dye won the Class A Herb Brooks Award for her work both on and off the ice this year.

Hoops History....

The St. Scholastica women’s basketball team made history over the weekend by qualifying for their first NCAA division three national tournament.

The Saints earned the berth by winning the UMAC Post–season tournament.

Monday they found out that they will face Cornell College of Iowa in Mount Vernon Iowa on Friday.

The Saints are 13–14 overall this year.

The UWS women’s basketball team did not qualify this year, but set the school record for wins and also hosted a WIAC playoff game.

Play Ball!

The Milwaukee Brewers played two split squad games and lost them both, 5-2 to the Reds and 7-1 to the Padres on Monday. The Twins beat the Pirates 5-4.

Minnesota Manager Ron Gardenhire made several coaching staff changes following last season and the staff has a new look this year and “Gardy” said he will miss those guys and the contributions they made over the years.  He added, he is also looking forward to working with the new staff this year.

He also enjoys the start of training camp.  Gardenhire said, “I love it, it’s a great time of the year.  You are in Florida in the sun lot’s people coming around, lot’s of fans coming around I get to walk around from field to field to meet the new players and here their story.  Baseball is baseball and it doesn’t get any better than that when you get down here.”
