The Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Board of Directors announced yesterday that due to the COVID-19 pandemic, fall sports will get a later start this year.

This change will affect the University of Minnesota Duluth Bulldog football, soccer, and the volleyball teams. Football teams can begin practice no earlier than Wednesday, September 2nd, with the first games to be played on September, 26th.

Both volleyball and soccer can begin practice on Tuesday, September 8th and the first matches can be played on Friday, October 2nd.

The UMD football team will now open up the season on September 26th against Wayne State at Malosky Stadium, and both volleyball and soccer teams will start season play on October 2nd, volleyball will host Minnesota State Mankato, and soccer will play Sioux Falls.

“This was a challenging decision for our membership to make,” stated NSIC Commissioner Erin Lindin a press release. “For the last several months, our membership has been working tirelessly to prepare for the fall sports season, including developing the resumption of athletic principles, revamping schedules and creating competition disruption plans. At this time, we remain optimistic that we can safely conduct a fall sports season and moving the start date of competition will give us the best opportunity to give our student-athletes the experience they deserve.”
