Four games vs Big Ten hockey teams for UMD over the weekend and the Bulldogs get three wins.

Big Ten teams with much bigger budgets couldn't handle UMD teams.  The UMD mens team split with the Ohio State Buckeyes.  The UMD Womens hockey team swept the Wisconsin Badgers.

The Bulldog womens hockey team, due to injuries were working with a short roster and topped Wisconsin 2-0 on Saturday and 1-0 on Sunday.  Wisconsin scoreless in Duluth in two games.

UMD Head Coach Shannon Miller said she asked her team to take a defensive approach this week, and it certainly worked.  UMD was outshot 31-17 on Saturday but outshot Wisconsin 28-25 Sunday.

UMD Freshman goaltender Kayla Black won her first two college games and at the same time, got her first shutouts.  She was outstanding on the weekend.

Brienna Gillanders and Jenna McParland scored for UMD on Saturday and Jessica Wong got the lone UMD goal on Saturday.

UMD is 2-2 overall and goes on the road to Mankato this weekend.

The UMD men's hockey team took care of Ohio State on Friday 6-2, with 9 different players recording points in the game.  It also marked the first UMD win over Ohio State in mens hockey.

The Bulldogs set the tone on Friday, just 65 seconds into the game as Austin Farley scored his first goal, on his first shift of college hockey.  Tony Cameranesi also playing on his first shift, got an assist on the play, with a pass in front of the net.  Farley added two other assists in the game.

Aaron Crandall with 25 saves in the nets for UMD.  Former Bulldog goaltender Brady Hjelle took the loss for the Buckeyes.

Saturday the Buckeyes took a 2-0 after the first period, UMD rallied to tie the game at 2-2 after two periods.  Max McCormick with the game winning goal for OSU at 6:56, just after a Derik Johnson goal for UMD was called off due to a player in the crease rule.

Duluth East grad Andy Welinski scored for UMD in the Friday game and was rewarded by getting his first UMD start on Saturday night.  Also starting Saturday night for OSU was Al McLean on defense, he is also a former Duluth East Greyhound.  Former Greyhounds Keegan Flaherty and Max Tardy also played in the series.

Head Coach Scott Sandelin, was impressed with his special teams, even thou they didn't have a lot of time to work on it, but was pleased with their efforts.  The UMD power-play tallied 5 goals and penalty-kill kept the Buckeyes to 1 for 13 on the power-play.

Sandelin said, "I was most impressed with our penalty-kill, we gave up the first goal, on their first power-play but we shut them down for the next 12.  Including a couple five on three's on Friday but I thought our killers did a great job all weekend and especially Saturday when we took some bad penalties and were down 2-0 they could have built on that lead, but we shut them down."

UMD has a rare Thursday / Friday series this weekend with Notre Dame in a non-conference series.  UMD and the Irish split their series last year at Amsoil Arena.  This will be UMD's first trip to Notre Dame's new rink.

UMD will be back at home to take on Wisconsin on Oct 26th and 27th.

Another Big Ten team, that could take a big tumble.
