An NFL source has told ESPN's Adam Schefter the Minnesota Vikings plan to release quarterback Donovan McNabb sometime Thursday. McNabb was benched in favor of rookie Christian Ponder in October after dissatisfaction from the coaching staff and fans regarding McNabb's performance.

Placing McNabb on waivers gives teams like Houston and Chicago the opportunity to pick up a serviceable quarterback to fill in for their injured starters. Rumors circling point to both teams being good contenders for McNabb, being the style of play of both the Bears and Texans doesn't demand a top-flight quarterback to win games.

The move places Joe Webb into a second-string quarterback role, with no direct third-string option in the event injuries require the Vikings look that deep.
