Duluth Police Warn Of Online Discount Pizza Scam

The Duluth Police Department shared a post on their Facebook page Monday afternoon, warning of a scam that targets pizza lovers. The scam originated from social media account @EmberPlugs on Twitter, offering a deal that seems too good to be true. As is usually the case, if it seems too good to be true, it usually is.

As the post from the Duluth Police explains, posts like the@EmberPlugs post (seen below) offers deals like $25 worth of pizza for only $5, $50 of pizza for $10, $75 of pizza for $15, and $100 of pizza for $20. The problem is, despite the Twitter account claiming the offers are 'legit', the Duluth Police says these offers are not legitimate.

The Duluth Police describe the scam as follows:

[What] EmberPlugs is actually doing is taking money from people who respond to the ad and using stolen credit cards to order the pizzas. So when you pay your $20 dollars to EmberPlugs they place an order with Domino's. Domino's then delivers the $100 dollars worth of Pizza to your residence. The pizza was paid for using a stolen credit card from somewhere else.

The Duluth Police Facebook post says that Twitter has been contacted about this scam and fraudulent account. In the meantime, the public is being asked not to use offers from @EmberPlugs, and to be cautious of online deals via websites, social media, or mobile apps that seem too good to be true.

Rather than using questionable social media offers, use verified, legitimate merchant websites or verified discount sites like SeizeTheDeal or Groupon that work directly with merchants to offer legitimate discounts..
