Most meteors people see from earth's surface are cool to look at, but they usually don't light up the whole sky. A meteor seen this week in Northern Minnesota did just that; grabbing the attention of people from the Brainerd area, well into Canada on Wednesday night (January 3).

Comments on a video posted on Facebook by River Bend Resort near Baudette had people citing postings from Nisswa in the Brainerd Lakes Area of Central Minnesota to Bemidji, Warroad, Roseau, and up into areas in Canada like Atikokan and Kenora in Ontario. The video from River Bend Resort shows a brilliant flash in the sky on a security camera, but unfortunately doesn't depict much more than that. Luckily, there was another camera elsewhere in Northern Minnesota that got a better look at what might have been the same meteor.

A Bemidji Police squad car caught the brilliant streak of the meteor as it burnt up in the sky north of town. The department shared the video on their Facebook page (seen below), which shows the bright, greenish-blue fireball extinguish as it approached the northern horizon. NASA says meteor activity is high right now, as part of the Quadrantid meteor shower. This meteor event peaked earlier this week, but it is expected to show activity until January 12.

With warmer conditions developing into the weekend and early next week, it might be worth sneaking out at night to look for some meteors. Cloudy conditions look to be in the forecast for most of the weekend, but clearing comes into the picture for the early part of the new week.
