Some sad news to report after a car accident near Duluth leaves one dead.

The Minnesota State Patrol is investigating a fatal automobile accident that happened around 6:15 PM Wednesday night at Highway 33 at Industrial Road in St. Louis County.

The State Patrol says that a Chevrolet Silverado was travelling northbound on Highway 33 when it broadsided a Hyundai Santa Fe that was eastbound on Industrial Road crossing Highway 33.

The driver of the Hyundai Santa Fe was identified as Jonathan Raymond Williams, aged 30 from Culver, MN, he was pronounced dead after the accident. The driver of the Chevrolet Silverado is identified as Justin Richard Eng, aged 31 from Saginaw, MN, he sustained non-life threatening injuries.

The State Patrol says the road conditions were dry and alcohol was not involved. The driver of the Chevrolet Silverado was wearing his seatbelt, while the driver of the Hyundai Santa Fe was not. Airbags deployed on both vehicles.

According to statistics from the Minnesota Department of Public Safety 2020 was an exceptionally deadly year on Minnesota roads with 370 traffic crashes in 2020, compared with 333 in 2019, those accidents lead to 395 deaths compared with 364 in 2019. Most of the fatalities, 118, were related to excessive speed, 109 people died in alcohol-related crashes, and 30 people died in distracted driving-related crashes. With many bars closed in 2020, the number of motorists that were arrested for DWI dropped from 27,975 in 2019 to 22,653.
