Motley Crue Album Sales Have Skyrocketed Thanks to ‘The Dirt’
Motley Crue album sales and streaming numbers have gone through the roof following the release of The Dirt. The Netflix feature’s success has given Crue’s music another life, increasing iTunes downloads by a remarkable 20 times.
Rock biopics seem to be a sure thing to explode your album sales. Following the release of Bohemian Rhapsody, sales of Queen’s Greatest Hits I, II & III: The Platinum Collection grew 662 percent, bringing the compilation album into the Billboard 200’s Top 10. The track “Bohemian Rhapsody” also jumped in the modern age, becoming the most streamed song released in the 20th century.
Motley Crue are experiencing the same phenomenon. According to Deadline, Crue have seen a 570 percent streaming increase on Spotify, a 669 percent increase on Deezer and a 900 percent increase on Apple Music.
Album and singles sales have also jumped, with iTunes purchases skyrocketing by over 2,000 percent. As of today (March 29) “Home Sweet Home” is the No. 1 rock song on iTunes, while “Kickstart My Heart,” “Live Wire” and “Girls, Girls, Girls” are all in the Top 10.
Motley Crue’s Greatest Hits album jumped to No. 3 on iTunes’ Top Rock Albums chart and The Dirt soundtrack currently sits at No. 9.
“In the film we show painful examples of domestic violence, DUI, manslaughter, drug overdose and the loss of a child. We couldn’t possibly have crammed everything from a 430-page book into an hour-and-50-minute movie, but we felt we achieved our objective of showing the downside of sex, drugs and rock and roll,” says Nikki Sixx.
