An already questionable Vikings offensive line just had another hole punched in it. Not by an opposing defense, but by the hand of the Vikings staff. Bryant McKinnie showed up to training camp considerably over his target weight, prompting the team staff to place him on the non-football injury list. This move, along with existing frustrations with his recent performance, and the acquisition of another veteran left tackle from the Indianapolis Colts, suggested McKinnie's days with the team may be numbered.

The team made the release announcement after a team meeting, stating health concerns for McKinnie as well as a concern as to his ability to perform as factors in the decision. McKinnie, however, contends this was his decision, not the team's. McKinnie and his agent turned to TMZ to provide his side of the story:

McKinnie tells us, his agent put in word with the Vikings moments ago -- before they officially cut him loose -- asking honchos to release McKinnie... so he can sign with another team before next season.

McKinnie was placed on the reserve/non-injury list yesterday, after doctors said his cholesterol was too high and he had to lose weight -- but McKinnie tells us, "I'll definitely be ready for next season. That's not even a question."

Although there was definitely tension between the Vikings and McKinnie, the parting of ways has been played off as amicable. The Vikings front office released a statement saying:

This decision, while not an easy one, is in the best interests of our football team as we move forward preparing for the season. We appreciate Bryant’s contributions to the Vikings, and we wish him the best in the future.

McKinnie's commentary came in fewer words on Twitter, saying "Its been fun"

In the meantime, the Vikings look to Phil Loadholt and newly-acquired Charlie Johnson to fill the hole on the offensive line. McKinnie, however, will probably focus on his record label, B Major (see story about label) until he gets signed by another team.
